Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze a specific phenomenon of a variant that is found in the Spanish spoken in the United States: columnar leveling or lost of the alternation. A group of speakers from the community of Tangamandapio, Michoacan, Mexico (one of the communities with the highest migration rate), who were residents in the USA, was interviewed. The data obtained is presented and analyzed following the data in Reyes (1976) on the innovation of the chicano verbs in morphophonetics. The differing results obtained in this investigation focusing in the first person plural of the present of subjunctive are presented and some conclusions are drawn.
