La Clitic climbing in Texas Spanish: Interaction between social and linguistic variables

This research studies optional direct object clitic climbing and its interaction with various social and linguistic factors within Spanish-speaking communities in Texas. The auxiliar verb lexeme was found to have a significant effect on the choice of proclitic or enclitic placement. The individual speaker was also a significant factor in determining clitic climbing. Other factors, although not significant when analyzed in isolation, were found to interact among themselves in systemic and significant ways. Furthermore, the roles of speaker generation, sex, and clitic type (reflexive/reciprocal, accusative) were also explored.
