By the Roads of the unaffordable Region: Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Transportation Infrastructures for Progress

The isthmus of Tehuantepec has been represented since XVI century as a passage route and ideal space for interoceanic communication. The configuration of an imaginary geography, that characterizes this region as backward and needy of progress to benefit from its geostrategic position, has been signed by transport infrastructures. Roads, railways and highways have been part of Mexican nation-state construction, it marked by integration policies, territorial disputes and control of this zone. Analyzing how transport infrastructures have been part of isthmus representation as passage route allow us to understand the politic relations that cross objects, in connection with people's lives. In addition, it encourages reflection on why development programs for the isthmus of Tehuantepec, since the twentieth century, have emphasized in transport infrastructures. In order to arrive at this approach it was necessary to carry out ethnographic fieldwork in communities of the isthmus of Tehuantepec, as part of my Phd. research, and the review of reports by chroniclers, travelers and engineers who visited the region during the 19th and 20th centuries.References
