Moléculas provenientes de alimentos con posibilidad de uso en el desarrollo de alimentos funcionales y nutracéuticos para el adulto mayor: una revisión narrativa
Resumen
En este texto se revisan diversas moléculas de origen natural, alimentos y probióticos con potencial uso en la prevención y el tratamiento de distintas enfermedades que afectan en mayor parte a los adultos mayores. Los adultos mayores son un grupo etario vulnerable que cada año representa un mayor porcentaje de la población mexicana y mundial, para el cual existen pocos alimentos funcionales y nutracéuticos. Se han investigado una gran cantidad de moléculas provenientes de alimentos con capacidad de uso en la formulación de alimentos y nutracéuticos, las cuales incluyen compuestos fenólicos, compuestos terpénicos, metabolitos primarios de plantas de naturaleza glucídica, lipídica, aminoacídica y purínica, prebióticos y probióticos, así como matrices alimentarias complejas. Patologías como las dislipidemias, la hipertensión arterial, la obesidad, la resistencia a la insulina, la diabetes mellitus tipo 2, el cáncer y las cardiopatías constituyen las mayores causas de muerte en el mundo, siendo en gran parte prevenibles a través de la alimentación, el ejercicio físico y un estilo de vida saludable. El objetivo de este trabajo fue concientizar al lector de la importancia y el potencial del desarrollo de alimentos funcionales y nutracéuticos con la información ya existente en la literatura científica, su uso y prescripción.
