Abstract

Some relevant steps of the history of genital anatomy studies concerning Scarab Beetles are summarized. The use of genital characters in taxonomy, systematics, and phylogeny of the group is especially stressed. A few theoretical topics regarding the evolution of genital structures are also discussed. Finally, a few critical remarks about the current perspectives of taxonomic and systematic research are alsoprovided.
