Bionomía del escarabajo estercolero Planolinellus vittatus (Say, 1825) (Coleoptera: Aphodiinae) en el Volcán Cofre de Perote, Veracruz, México

Considerando la importancia biológica, ecológica y económica que tienen los escarabajos del estiércol, en este trabajo se presentan datos sobre la bionomía de Planolinellus vittatus (Say, 1825), especie común en los pastizales ganaderos de la vertiente oriental del Cofre de Perote, Veracruz, México. En el rancho Pextlan, esta especie no es muy abundante, pero está activa casi todo el año. Las abundancias altas de individuos se presentan durante la primavera y el inicio del verano, de marzo a principios de junio, que coinciden con la época de sequía y el inicio de las lluvias. Es una especie multivoltina, con ciclos reproductivos que se solapan todo el tiempo. La máxima actividad reproductiva se observó cuando se presentan baja humedad y alta temperatura. El desarrollo preimaginal dura de 17 a 20 días a 23 °C y se lleva a cabo en la costra superficial y seca de la boñiga. Hembras y machos maduran muy rápido y comienzan a reproducirse a los 10 días de la emergencia. Su etapa reproductiva dura aproximadamente 15 días, tras la cual agotan su potencial reproductor y mueren. Este tipo de resultados son necesarios para implementar medidas de conservación de las especies de este grupo de insectos que son afectados por los residuos de los químicos empleados en las prácticas agropecuarias.
