Abstract

Las meliponas son abejas que se caracterizn por la ausencia de aguijón y por ser eusociales (igual que Apis mellifera), almacenan recursos en sus colonias, tales como miel, polen y propoleo. Estas abejas (algunas nativas del sureste mexicano) han sido aprovechadas tradicionalmente por las culturas prehispánicas, alcanzando su máximo desarrollo con la Maya. Debido a la introducción de A. mellifera, que produce más miel y polen, y el auge de la industria azucarera, esta actividad ha sufrido una grave reducción y actualmente se encuentra en peligro de desaparecer. El presente ensayo incluye información biológica de estos insectos, antecedentes de la meliponicultura y su situación actual.
